I love chocolate dipped fruit! And, these Chocolate Dipped Orange Slices are incredibly delicious and super easy to make. Sweetened tart candied orange slices and smooth creamy dark chocolate work so well together.

Using pre-candied orange slices means this recipe is only 2-ingredients! This quick snack and treat is great for holidays, charcuterie and dessert boards.

One of the items that always in my Trader Joe's shopping cart are Sweetened Dried Orange Slices. They are slightly bitter, sweet and tart. Which makes them the most fabulous addition to any charcuterie and dessert board. But, adding chocolate to these orange slices are a beautiful pairing. Juicy, sweet oranges contrasts deliciously with slightly bitter, dark, rich chocolate.

If you're looking for even more ideas with Trader Joe's products you have to try my Trader Joe's Crudité Platter, Trader Joe's Chocolate Cookie Butter Fondue and Trader Joe's Fruit & Cheese Board.

Ingredient Notes

A red bag of chocolate melting wafers and below are two bags of sweetened dried orange slices. Both on a wood background and each labeled with a white rectangle box with dark red text in all caps.

Chocolate - For all my chocolate dipping needs I use Ghirardelli Melting Wafers. They are delicious, easy to use and come in a variety of flavors - milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate. Grab your favorite and start melting. No tempering is required to get that glossy chocolate coating! These can be found at most grocery stores in the baking aisle, Target, Walmart and even Amazon. It's the only ingredient in my One-Ingredient Chocolate Bag.

Sweetened Dried Orange Slices - While you could spend an hour + making your own candied orange slices, I like taking a trip to my local Trader Joe's and grabbing a bag of their Sweetened Dried Orange Slices. A bag is $1.99 + tax for about 12 slices.

Step-by-Step Instruction

  1. Heat Ghirardelli Chocolate Melting Wafers according to package. I am using the double boil method. Melt chocolate until smooth and completely melted.
A small metal bowl set up on a double broiler on the stove with melted chocolate. In the upper left corner is a dark red square with a white '1' in the center.
  1. Carefully transfer hot melted chocolate to a mug. Line a baking sheet/sheet pan with a piece of parchment paper or silicone mat. Dip candied orange slices one at a time into chocolate about ½ way. Lift and let access chocolate fall off or carefully tap access chocolate off. Place on the sheet pan and repeat with remaining orange slices.
A sheet pan lined with brown parchment paper with freshly dipped chocolate orange slices. The chocolate dip is halfway on the left side of the orange. A mug of melted chocolate is to the left of the baking sheet. Everything sits on a light brown wood background. In the upper left corner is a dark red square with a white '2' in the center.
  1. Allow candied oranges to sit until chocolate is completely set (about 10 minutes). Peel dipped oranges from parchment paper and enjoy.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure all your equipment is absolutely dry and free from any water droplets, otherwise your chocolate will seize and be grainy.
  • Refrigerate if needed for quicker setting - I found that once I was done dipping all the oranges, the first ½ I dipped we're already set and the others ones we're close to being done as well! But, if you need to have the oranges set up quicker leave the them in the fridge for a few minutes until set.
  • When dipping choose the right vessel for dipping - I suggest using a mug instead of a bowl. It has high enough walls to allow for easy dipping and mugs usually are the perfect width for the slices.

Recipe FAQ

Can I make my own candied orange slices?

Yes!

Can I use normal chocolate chips?

Technically yes, you can if that's what available to you! But, I would recommend melting wafers as they are made for dipping. They melt super smoothly and set up firmly when used compared to chocolate chips which do not hold their shape.
