This recipe is simple and easy - this recipe is ready in about 5 minutes.

Peanut Butter Magic Shell goes together with so many flavors of ice cream

Ingredient Notes

A jar of peanut butter and a jar of coconut oil on a cement background. Each it labeled with white text in alls caps.

Coconut Oil - Needs to be refined to ensure there is no coconut flavor. This is how the magic happens. Coconut oil is in a solid phase but when heated it melts to a liquid.

Peanut Butter - Adds a salty, nutty flavor that is oh so craveable! I recommend using creamy peanut butter. For best results, avoid natural or homemade peanut butter.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Melted peanut butter in a small bowl on a cement background. In the upper left corner is a dark red square with a white '1' in the center.
  1. In a microwave safe bowl, melt peanut butter for 30 seconds - 1 minute.

  1. Stir again before pouring over cold ice cream. Wait at least 30 seconds - 1 minute for the magic shell to harden. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

Refined Coconut Oil is Key - which has a neutral flavor. Unrefined coconut oil will give your Magic Shell a stronger coconut aroma and taste.

Use Store Bought Peanut Butter - I have NOT used this recipe with a natural or homemade peanut butter so I'm unsure what the consistency will be like. I use good ole fashion Jif Peanut Butter or Skippy's.

Endless Flavor Possibilities - you can choose different ice cream flavors other than just vanilla. Like chocolate, chocolate chip, coffee, peanut butter, cookie dough, cookies and cream just to name a few. Or, enjoy the peanut butter magic shell with hot fudge for a play on a Reese's inspired sundae. You can also add chopped peanuts or pretzels or even a dash of cinnamon.

Recipe FAQ

What is magic shell?

It's a type of ice cream topping that hardens on the ice cream. It creates a shell that your can break apart and eat. Traditionally, it's a chocolate magic shell but you can get creative and make a peanut butter type like this recipe of even a Cookie Butter Magic Shell.

Can I use this on room temperature food?

I think the recipe could work on ice cream cake or cold cheesecake. But for something like dipping brownies, apple slices or popcorn I would recommend melting peanut butter chips with a bit of coconut oil.
